What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy helps individuals participate in meaningful activities by supporting their unique ways of engaging with the world. We provide strategies, adaptations, and skill-building to empower individuals in their daily lives. Our goal is to honour each person’s strengths and needs while ensuring they have the tools and resources to thrive.
What an Occupational Therapist can support:
-
Embracing and accommodating individual sensory preferences and needs.
-
Collaborating to establish routines that are tailored to the person’s needs and strengths.
-
Cultivating life skills and fostering self-care independence.
-
Nurturing social connections in ways that align with individual interests and prefrences.
-
Advocating for and supporting all communication styles.
-
Identifying and implementing strategies tailored to the individual’s strengths.
-
Conducting assessments and creating comprehensive reports to support NDIS planning.
Understanding Neurodiversity
Neurodiversity celebrates the wide range of human brain functioning. Just as there are diverse personalities, abilities, and cultural expressions, there is also natural variation in the way our brains process the world.
The Neurodivergent Umbrella by Sonny Wise (The Lived Experience Educator) powerfully illustrates the diversity within neurodivergence. This artwork reminds us that neurodivergent people are part of the natural variation of human experience.

The Importance of Lived Experience Professionals
At Tiny Steps Therapy, we believe that lived experience is a critical foundation for providing meaningful and impactful support. Our team includes Autistic and ADHD professionals who bring firsthand knowledge of the challenges, strengths, and diverse experiences of being Autistic and ADHD. This unique perspective allows us to approach therapy with deep empathy, authenticity, and understanding, ensuring our clients feel truly heard and supported.
We acknowledge that we are only a small part of the larger neurodivergent community, and we are committed to amplifying the voices of others within this group. We recognise the diversity of neurotypes within our community and actively seek to be informed by their lived experiences. Our mission is to shape our practice not only with clinical expertise but also with the lived experiences of everyone under the neurodivergent umbrella.
